The Watergate Complex, including the Watergate Hotel, was the center of the infamous scandal in the 1970s that led to Richard Nixon’s resignation and near impeachment. Today, it embraces its history in good humor with a newly redesigned room inspired by the scandal to celebrate its 45^th anniversary.

Even more fitting, the room is designed by Lyn Paolo, costume designer for the ABC series Scandal, which centers on fictional political cover-ups and controversies in Washington, D.C.

Room 214 is significant to the Watergate scandal, as it is where the leaders of the break-in kept in contact with the burglary team. The hotel wanted to commemorate the event by doing something bold. Subtle touches throughout the hotel include room keys reading “no need to break in,” Nixon speeches playing over the phone system and pencils reading “I stole this from The Watergate Hotel.”

The room itself contains relics from the past, including an old typewriter on the desk, a pair of binoculars to keep lookout and framed newspaper clippings from the scandal.
