Several exciting exhibitions will debut at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s locations this autumn. “Rodin at the Met” (Sept. 16–Jan. 15, 2018, at The Met Fifth Avenue) rolls out nearly 50 of Rodin’s marble, bronze, plaster and terracotta works. The exhibit will be housed in the newly renovated Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Sculpture Gallery, and will include well-known pieces such as The Thinker and The Hand of God, along with the little-seen The Tempest. In nearby Gallery 809, a wide selection of Rodin’s prints, letters, drawings and illustrated books will be on view, augmented with photographs of the sculptor.
Sept. 13–Jan. 14, 2018 (at The Met Breuer), “Delirious: Art at the Limits of Reason” explores the decades 1950–1980, marked by military conflict, political unrest and a growing interest in hallucinatory experiences. The exhibit is divided into four areas: Vertigo, Excess, Nonsense and Twisted, with about 100 works by 62 different artists working in a variety of mediums. Featured artists include Dara Birnbaum, Hanne Darboven, Nancy Grossman, Philip Guston, Eva Hesse, Yayoi Kusama, Ana Mendieta, Bruce Nauman, Hélio Oiticica, Claes Oldenburg, Abraham Palatnik, Paul Thek and Stan VanDerBeek.
Also at the Met Breuer, “Edvard Munch: Between the Clock and the Bed” (Nov. 15–Feb. 4, 2018) includes 45 of the artist’s most-noted compositions, spanning 60 years and including 16 self-portraits. Many of the works in the exhibition have never been seen in the United States, and more than half of the included works were from the artist’s personal collection. Back at The Met Fifth Avenue, British artist David Hockney is the subject of a major retrospective of the same name (Nov. 27–Feb. 25, 2018). Paintings, drawings, photography and video works track the artist’s phenomenal career and his ongoing exploration of the nature of perception and how it is expressed. The Met dates for “David Hockney” will be the exhibition’s only North American appearance.
