Norwegian Air International recently received approval from the Department of Transportation to launch trans-Atlantic flights from the United States. Now, as the carrier sets up its bases in the States, it has plans to use smaller airports rather than larger hubs.

Thomas Ramdahl, chief commercial officer, Norwegian Air, told the Wall Street Journal the company will set up shop at airports like Stewart International Airport in New Windsor, N.Y., 65 miles north of New York City. Norwegian will join Allegiant, American Airlines, JetBlue and Delta Air Lines in flying to and from Stewart.

Ramdahl said Norwegian Air is also looking at either Portsmouth International Airport in New Hampshire or T.F. Green Airport in Providence, R.I. It is also considering Bradley International Airport in Hartford, Conn.

Norwegian is planning to offer flights to Europe for as little as $69 one-way and it will use Boeing’s 737 Max single-aisle airplanes, which seat up to 189 passengers. The DOT only granted Norwegian Air the right to fly internationally into and out of the United States last month. The airline’s stock immediately shot up 12 percent.

“There is zero downside to allowing more low-cost carriers into U.S. airports: it’s a policy that’s good for consumers, stupendous for U.S. economic and job growth, and even good for U.S. airlines because it broadens the market for domestic connector flights,” Roger Dow, president-CEO, U.S. Travel Association, said in a statement. “More choices for American travelers and more capacity to bring foreign visitors and their dollars to U.S. shores is the unimpeachably correct decision, period.”
