Lufthansa and Etihad Airways struck a deal for a codeshare agreement on select flights. The agreement went into effect Jan. 1.
Lufthansa will place its code on Etihad’s twice-daily flights from Abu Dhabi (AUH) to Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC). Lufthansa discontinued its own flights between Abu Dhabi and Frankfurt in 2015, so this deal allows Lufthansa to essentially resume that flight without incurring additional expenses.
Etihad will place its code on Lufthansa’s flights from Frankfurt to Rio de Janeiro (GIG) and Bogotá (BOG), giving the company access to two new South American cities.
The agreement also allows Lufthansa to wet-lease 38 planes from airberlin, which Etihad owns a 29 percent stake in, for use with subsidiaries Eurowings and Austrian Airlines.
The two airlines have not always had such a warm relationship; last year, James Hogan, president and CEO, Etihad Aviation Group, said his company was being undermined by Lufthansa’s “lobbying efforts and protectionist tactics.”
