A new exhibition exploring the wonders of Cuba opened at the American Museum of Natural History, New York City. The country’s biodiversity includes wide wetlands, remote forests, deep caves and caverns and offshore reefs. Developed in collaboration with the Museo Nacional de Historia Natural de Cuba (Cuban National Museum of Natural History), the exhibition will include a recreation of the Zapata wetlands where endangered Cuban crocodiles dwell, along with live species such as lizards, boas, frogs and the world’s smallest bird.

Cuban culture is also explored through the lens of music, art, spiritual traditions, dance, food and farming practices. There’s a replica of a throne part of rituals used during orisha worship and the Santeria spiritual tradition, and a space where the craft of tobacco cultivation is examined in depth. ¡Cuba! is co-curated by Ana Luz Porzecanski, Ph.D, director of AMNH’s Center for Biodiversity and Conservation, and Chris Raxworthy, Ph.D, curator-in-charge in the AMNH Department of Herpetology. ¡Cuba! will be on view until Aug. 13, 2017.
