Big changes are happening in Lisbon, with a multimillion euro port development project that includes a new multipurpose terminal, along with separate expansion nearby dedicated to museum growth. One of Europe’s most enduringly beautiful port cities, Lisbon has no shortage of museum offerings already — many of them little known to American travelers. Located just off the famous Rua Augusta pedestrian street running toward the massive city gates and the sea, MUDE (Museu do Design e da Moda) is certainly one to watch for. Housing the Francisco Capelo Collection with examples of textiles, furniture, glass and appliances spanning major design periods, collection pieces include a number of seminal mid-century modern chairs, sofas and original designer pieces by Yves Saint Laurent. After you’ve had your fill of the exhibition, stroll the intricately tiled streets and squares nearby to admire the host of fountains and statues, or climb the winding, uneven sidewalks that lead to the grand Moorish-style São Jorge Castle. Other top sites include the twin-towered Lisbon Cathedral on Lago da Sé. Later, slip into a local café for fragrant coffee and Portugal’s sweet, round custard tarts called pastéis de nata. Available at cafés throughout the city, they’re especially associated with the Pastéis de Belém near the waterfront in the historic Belém neighborhood. In town for the evening?
