Visiting The New York Neighborhood Of Astoria

by David Coker

Sep 22, 2015

Nestled under the shadow of the Manhattan skyline, Astoria is one of my favorite New York City neighborhoods. This Queens community offers a reprieve from the manic intensity of the city’s big brother borough while maintaining the diversity and bustle that make New York attractive. Brooklyn may steal its thunder when it comes to discussing trendy new places to live, but for a soothing, affordable rest stop away from the Big Apple, you can’t beat Astoria. Astoria, New York I would be remiss if I didn’t begin my argument with a culinary bent. Astoria has been labeled as one of the most culturally diverse places in America, and this description supports itself in the endless selection of ethnic foods lining its streets. The neighborhood is well-known for its Greek background, and Mediterranean restaurants are ubiquitous. I’m a sucker for tacos or sushi, so it’s good Latin and Asian cuisine are also popular options. There are enough American barbecue joints to satisfy any burger lover, and at prices substantially lower than your average New York establishment. Astoria, New York Astoria is largely residential, so the conventional tourist activities are a bit lacking. But the Museum of the Moving Image has a comprehensive collection of everything from classic films to video games and is known for its interactive exhibits. The Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden offers a great place for an autumn hangout to watch a game and relax. You could also go to Astoria Park by the river and watch the sun set behind Manhattan’s iconic skyscrapers. I enjoy simply walking around and getting a feel for the area and its people. Astoria, New York Other parts of New York City may get the glory, but if you’re a well-traveled visitor to New York and are looking for something a bit more low-key, then Astoria is mere minutes by subway and always worth checking out. — Sean Williams, intern
