From Feb. 13–22, the historic town of York in northern England is the setting for the Jorvik Viking Festival. Now in its 31st year, the festival’s 2015 theme is Brave New Viking World. Family-friendly events include guided walks through the city’s many historic sites, battle reenactments in full Viking dress, and plenty of lectures and demonstrations to get you up to speed on Viking myth, history and lore.
The largest of its kind in Europe, the festival draws 40,000 visitors from around world to York, with plenty of opportunities to participate. Brawl in the Guildhall: The Strongest Viking Competition 2015 includes challenges in log running, shield wrestling, Dane axe holding, Holmgang combat and a tug of war. Eight participants will be chosen for the event, to be held on Feb. 21 in the city’s Guildhall, so be sure to polish up your armor.
