A collection of four private apartments nestled within the Ria Formosa lagoon and nature reserve on Portugal’s sunny southern coast, Quintamar is edged by a fresh water lake perfect for swimming. Organic orchards and gardens produce lemons, figs, quinces, pomegranates, oranges, pears and apples, and guests are welcome to help themselves to the fresh bounty. Residents of the reserve include doves, rabbits, storks and guinea pigs.
The reserve and apartments are roughly a mile from the sea, in an area known as a popular location for wild dolphins. A small, scenic rail line runs to the sandy shores of Barril Beach, and both bird watching and dolphin-viewing excursions are available from the small town of Tavira nearby. Cycling tours follow a route through olive and citrus orchards along the coast, eventually culminating at the lighthouse and cliffs of São Vicente. Families, solo travelers and groups of up to 24 people can be accommodated; rates vary with apartment and dates of travel. Faro Airport is approximately 40 minutes away.
