I am looking forward to my next trip to Los Angeles, where I will be able to write a GT Tested review of the Hotel Shangri-La, Santa Monica. If you frequent the area, you are familiar with the property, as you cannot miss its sleek Art Deco design. The form and architecture of the building make one think it is ready to move like a speeding locomotive or steaming ship. Built in 1939, the property is the perfect example of the “Streamline Moderne” style of Art Deco architecture, and its image takes you back to the heyday of Old Hollywood.
In 2009, a $30-million transformation brought this grande dame back as a top destination in Santa Monica. At Global Traveler, we are excited, as we will host our annual Leisure Awards at the Hotel Shangri-La, Santa Monica in April 2014. I think I will feel like Clark Gable as I announce the winners at this iconic property. With only 71 rooms and suites, this is a perfect-sized hotel with great venue space. Every room has a view of the Pacific Ocean.
