Luminato
Toronto, Canada June 8–17
This Festival of Arts and Creativity brings theater, dance, music, literature, food, fashion and film to stages and
street corners citywide. Top ticket is the North American premier of Einstein on the Beach, a five-hour operatic
work by Robert Wilson and Philip Glass (June 8–10), but the biggest show is free: “The Encampment,” a
large-scale art installation, complete with tents and costumes, marking the bicentennial of the War of 1812.
Cotswold Olimpicks
Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire, England June 1
Countryside games mark the 400th anniversary
of this annual competition staged
since Shakespearean times at Robert
Dover’s castle. Oodles of obstacle racing
and shin kicking — in which contestants
stuff their trousers with straw and go at
it in steel-toed boots — are capped off by
a torchlight parade and Morris dancing
until midnight.
Diamond Jubile
London, England June 2–5
All of London takes tea with the Queen
as parties and pageantry mark Queen
Elizabeth II’s 60-year reign. On Sunday,
a thousand-boat procession engulfs
the Thames, and Buckingham Palace
hosts a pomp and circumstance concert.
Find your place at the table for a picnic
on that same regal Sunday during the
citywide Big Jubilee Lunch. (Forget the
financial crisis: This is a four-day bank
holiday.)
Reopening Of In Flanders Fields Museum
Ieper, Belgium June 11
After a complete makeover and the addition of 50 percent more interactive space and displays, this ranks as the best portal to World War I in Europe. Browse the new museum shop, do R&R in the new café and salute the Flanders battlefields and cemeteries from the heights of the visitors-now-allowed Belfry Tower.
Liberation Day Parade
Stanley, Falkland Islands June 14
Ceremonies at the Liberation Monument and Christ Church Cathedral mark the 30th anniversary of the conflict between Britain and Argentina over these remote southern islands, where today the abundant wildlife, ranging from penguins to elephant seals, is drawing new kinds of armies, armed with digital cameras and smartphones.
Fremont Fair
Seattle, Wash. June 16–17
Seattle’s most eclectic neighborhood celebrates both Father’s Day and its own de libertas quirkas culture with music on four stages, vendors on all sides and a non-motorized display of mobile art. Come Sunday, there’s a pup parade, beer garden and, somewhere in the wings, 50 funky art cars.
International Sephardic Music Festival
Cordoba, Spain June 19–23
International performers give voice to Sephardic sounds in outdoor evening concerts in the Botanical Garden of Cordoba. Don’t pass up the pre-concert workshops covering everything from Sephardic cooking to kosher wine tasting.
Alice Springs Beanie Festival
Alice Springs, Australia June 22–25
When the weavers, knitters and crocheters of the world go Down Under, they don’t have to beat the bush to come up with the world’s best beanies. The aboriginal crafters who have been spinning Australia’s iconic if humble headdresses into works of art for centuries are all here running workshops, spinning wool, competing for prizes and swapping yarns with crafters from Up Over.

May 30, 2025By-the-cabin Yachting Redefines the Cruise Experience
I wish this day could last forever!” my windswept 9-year-old exclaimed, his voice soaring over the Mediterranean. He gripped the helm of a Bali 4.6 sailing catamaran off the coast of Marseille, his sun- bleached hair whipping in the salty breeze. The scent of the sea mingled with the aroma of warm baguettes drifting from the Côte d’Azur shoreline. Our captain, a seasoned sailor, subtly adjusted course, letting my son feel the exhilarating pull of the wind against the sails. As the waves lapped against the hull, I realized this was no ordinary vacation — this was freedom, unfiltered.
