Why It’s Worth Visiting This Brand-New Mall with Its Own Central Park in Bangkok, Thailand

There are many cities in the world with a “Central Park” in them, but Bangkok’s new Central Park, completed in 2025 and designed by Linehouse, is a pretty special shopping mall.

The project stands on the former Dusit Thani Hotel site. Built in the 1970s, the hotel was once Bangkok’s tallest building and remained a symbol of Thai hospitality and a cultural landmark for more than 50 years. Central Park pays tribute to Dusit Thani’s legacy by integrating heritage, hospitality, motifs and forms. The result honors the past while projecting a modern way of living that is urban, green and connected.

This indoor/outdoor Central Park is shaped by Bangkok’s distinctive urban context. It unfolds as a spatial journey through heritage, urbanity and nature, an exercise in placemaking expressed across a series of unique retail neighborhoods. The retail journey reflects Dusit Thani’s role as a cultural landmark while responding to its surroundings, drawing on the character of neighboring districts.

Upon entering Central Park at street level, the energy shifts from the bustle of Silom, known as a downtown business district by day and transformed into a vibrant nightlife area by sunset. Shopping areas here blend heritage with modernity. Tethered ceiling coffers and floor patterns reinterpret profiles and motifs from former Dusit Thani Hotel in a fresh, contemporary palette. This design language continues into the elevator lobbies and bathrooms, where heritage-inspired profiles are expressed with a modern edge in tectonic metals.

Level Two is Fashion Playground, home to contemporary fashion retailers. Level Three, Park Life Energy, is dedicated to sports and lifestyle retail. Technology Retail occupies Level Four. Conceived as an urban playground, it explores the surrounding digital and urban fabric of Silom.

Upon reaching Level Five, The Culinary Theatre, guests step into a lush dining environment that seamlessly merges the indoors with the natural beauty of the adjacent park. The space is conceived as an elevated alfresco experience, blending heritage charm with modernity. Restaurants are defined by double height façades of timber and metal, accented with mirrors, planters and fabric awnings that create a rhythmic boulevard atmosphere. A sweeping wooden canopy wraps the perimeter, anchored by a central back-lit skylight that dissolves the boundary between inside and out. At ground level, softly contoured seating and greenery set in glazed green tiles, complemented by focal trees, provide intimate spaces for quiet dining and pause. The Culinary Theatre connects seamlessly to Bangkok’s largest urban rooftop garden, a vibrant green space designed for communal use and enjoyment at any time of day.

The building features three main circulation voids, each symbolically defined by metals regarded as prosperous and auspicious in Thai culture: copper, silver and bronze.

The Silver Void, circular form, is among the first encountered. Its neutral palette and reflective surfaces create a calming and clarifying atmosphere; a quiet counterpoint to the digital rhythm introduced by LED screens integrated into the balustrade.

The Copper Void serves as the pulsing heart of the building, a dynamic and active community hub. Sectionally, the void steps back on each floor plate to reveal overlapping, backlit escalators. Movement is framed by illuminated platforms, encouraging connection and visibility. The cladding shifts in tone from dusty pink to reddish copper, responding to natural light from above.

The journey concludes with the Bronze Void, where circular architectural forms frame the retail floors and activities beyond. Vertical bronze profiles and lighting strips establish a rhythmic energy, reinforcing momentum and flow.

Ultimately, Central Park, in the Silom district, is more than a retail destination. It is a vibrant cultural hub that connects past and present, community and commerce, and architecture with the living fabric of the city.

The Silom district is well connected to public transportation with both MRT underground train and BTS SkyTrain running through this area, making it easy to explore Silom and other areas of Bangkok.

The Flight Less Taken: Unsung Carriers Whisk You Away to Far-Flung Destinations

The miracle of flight feels slightly less miraculous these days. Endless delays, cramped seating and shortchanged amenities feel par for the course, and one can easily forget the wondrous fact that you’re hurtling above planet Earth, soaring above the clouds and across the skies to your destination of choice. In the olden days, you were limited to the fallibility of your outrigger canoe or horse-drawn carriage. It’s not hyperbolic to invoke the invention of the wheel when reminding oneself to stay calm and carry on in coach.

Review: Bodysgallen Hall

The National Trust owns more than 500 historic buildings across the United Kingdom, each offering a vivid sense of its particular era. In common with many visitors, I often find myself wondering what it would be like to actually live in such a place. Imagine sitting, for instance, in one of those ancient oak-paneled drawing rooms at night, with the fire roaring and the wind rattling the ancient mullioned windows. I didn’t have to imagine it. Here I was, immersed in history in 17th-century Bodysgallen Hall in North Wales.

How Safe Are Theme Park Rollercoasters? Should We Be More Wary?

No matter your age, we’ve all ventured to an amusement park at one point or another. Whether taking a trip solely to visit a theme park and ride rollercoasters or tacking on an extra day of a trip to enjoy some thrills at a nearby park, it’s nearly impossible to not enter an amusement park. But even the most adrenaline-seeking travelers are starting to pause after the Oct. 12 incident in which 42-year-old Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem fell to his death while riding Goliath rollercoaster at Six Flags Over Georgia, a theme park outside of Atlanta. After the tragedy, Six Flags, the country’s largest theme park operator, closed 10 rides across seven states.
