Few wellness experiences are as delightful as sitting in a soothing sauna while gazing out at a mountainside vista. Now, guests at Scribner’s Catskill Lodge in Hunter, New York, can do exactly that thanks to a new partnership with Harbor Saunas.
“We’re always looking for ways to deepen the experience of being in the Catskills, and this partnership with Harbor Saunas felt like a natural extension of that,” said Jade Sinskul, director of Marketing, Escape Hospitality. “It brings together thoughtful design, wellness and a real connection to the outdoors in a way that feels both intentional and effortless for our guests. Together, we’ve created something that encourages people to slow down, stay present and fully take in their surroundings.”
Accommodating up to 10 guests at a time, the custom-built outdoor sauna was created to be a miniature version of the lodge itself, and marks the first-ever hospitality collaboration for Harbor Saunas. This Northeast-based design and build studio is known for a selection of sauna drawings from Scandinavian influences.
“The Catskills have always been a special place for our team, and we couldn’t be more excited to bring one of our saunas to Scribner’s for their guests to experience,” added HB Mertz, principal, Harbor Saunas. “The intentionality in design and material choices found throughout the lodge and surrounding property reflects the same ethos behind our saunas at Harbor, making Scribner’s a natural choice for our first hospitality partnership.”
Besides relaxing in the new sauna space, guests at the 38-room mountain lodge property can enjoy a variety of curated experiences such as guided fly fishing, private yoga, “Glice” skating, tarot and astrological readings, one-on-one Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coaching, and private photoshoots.

During “the Golden Age of Air Travel,” in the 1950s and ’60s, getting aboard an airplane was a special occasion, with passengers wearing their best outfits to suit the exclusive setting and lavish dining. This changed during the 1970s and into the 1980s, when commercial air travel became more democratized, thanks in part to the U.S. Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, and luxury was contained within business- and first-class cabins. In the last 30 years, as discount carriers found their audience, more shifts took place in major carriers’ premium cabins and lounges.

The miracle of flight feels slightly less miraculous these days. Endless delays, cramped seating and shortchanged amenities feel par for the course, and one can easily forget the wondrous fact that you’re hurtling above planet Earth, soaring above the clouds and across the skies to your destination of choice. In the olden days, you were limited to the fallibility of your outrigger canoe or horse-drawn carriage. It’s not hyperbolic to invoke the invention of the wheel when reminding oneself to stay calm and carry on in coach.
