Autumn’s just around the corner and if you’re planning an outdoor adventure in cooler air, here’s good news: Walk Japan introduced two new tours on the main island of Honshu.

Travelers can immerse themselves in nature, enjoy a guided excursion or move at their own pace and discover off-the-beaten-track gems missed by many. With start points accessible via train from Tokyo, these new tours are set in tranquil locations offering opportunities to encounter authentic Japanese culture and cuisine.

The Izu Wayfarer Tour takes in the island’s powerful volcanic landscape found between Izu Kogen and Mishima on the Izu Peninsula. This self-guided expedition is actually a version of the guided Izu Geo Trail tour already offered by Walk Japan. Following coasts formed of lava and spanning picturesque port towns that factored in Japanese culture and history, this tour takes place in UNESCO Global Geopark. Designed for active walkers, it generally involves covering between 7.5 and 11.13 miles per day for six days, but can be extended — or shortened — on request. Prices begin at $1,650 per person.

Discover the magic of traditional onsen hot spring bathing, along with Japanese culinary traditions during the Onsen Gastronomy: Kiso in Nagano Tour. Participants explore Kiso Valley; Kaida Plateau; and Ontake-san, an active volcano held by many to be sacred. The five-day, four-night fully guided tour begins in Nagoya and ends in Kiso-Fukushima. Designed to accommodate up to 12 participants, this slow-paced journey covers an average 2 miles per day through Edo-period towns, taking in sacred shrines and pilgrimage paths.
