Feeling peckish? If you’re lucky enough to be in England’s capital, head to Rosewood London’s Mirror Room, where a fabulous new afternoon tea menu has been introduced, featuring a selection of Japanese-inspired savories and delectable art cakes curated by Executive Pastry Chef Mark Perkins. It’s inspired by artist and printmaker Katsushika Hokusai, widely regarded as one of Japan’s most celebrated creatives and known for works including the woodblock print series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji (1830–1832) and The Great Wave off Kanagawa (1831).

Service begins with Japanese BBQ beef brisket with wasabi coleslaw on a milk bun, sake-marinated smoked salmon with yuzu Kosho mayo, caviar and dill; and a Japanese egg sandwich. Next, there’s a delicate cheesecake with hints of Japanese citrus, delivered along with freshly baked scones, jams and clotted cream.

The delicious culmination to this culinary adventure is the arrival of charming cakes, named for Hokusai’s grand works. Guests can indulge in Cherry Blossom and Warbler (1827), a Japanese roll cake with Sakura cherry jelly, Sencha-infused ganache and yuzu chocolate; The Great Wave off Kanagawa, a white chocolate lemon chiffon cake with strawberry compote and lychee vanilla cream; and Thunderstorm Beneath the Summit (1830–1834), made with matcha Namelaka, matcha pistachio feuilletine, miso caramel and 64 percent chocolate mousse.

To accompany the new menu, guests can choose from an exclusive selection of Japanese teas and enjoy a tableside matcha brewing ceremony. Handcrafted cocktails include The Lantern Ghost, a blend of Roku Gin, yuzu, strawberry, umeshu (plum wine), orange blossom and citrus. There’s a mocktail choice, as well, called Zen; this refreshing beverage melds Seedlip Garden, Martini Floreale, CBD oil and lemon oil.

To augment the new afternoon tea menu and immerse guests in the essence of Hokusai’s work, Mirror Room is hosting live demonstrations of Japanese woodblock printing in collaboration with area artists and art schools. Themed décor includes bonsai trees and traditional Japanese floral arrangements, transporting guests into a world of tranquility. The Hokusai-Inspired Art Afternoon Tea is available Monday–Sunday from noon to 5:45 p.m. Reservations may be made via Rosewood London’s website.
