Leisurely afternoon tea flavored with castle views? You’ll enjoy this and plenty more at 100 Princes Street, Red Carnation’s newest property in Scotland’s fascinating capital city. Set within a historic structure that once served as headquarters for the Royal Overseas League, this luxurious hotel promises to both pamper guests and immerse them in a truly Scottish experience.
Within walking distance of Scottish National Gallery and facing historic Edinburgh Castle, the hotel has been designed to suggest a swish, private, members-only club. Sense-of-place touches in décor include a vast, hand-painted mural by Croxford and Saunders, specialists in fine decorative arts. Placed along the lobby’s five-story-high staircase, the mural is an inspiring ode to explorers of all kinds and all who seek to encounter history, culture and tradition as part of their own personal journeys.
Signature suites include the Archibald and Isobel, named for Scottish explorers Archibald Menzies and Isobel Wylie Hutchison. At The Wallace, guests can relax with an opulent afternoon tea service or explore rare Scottish whiskies during a guided tasting. Among the selection of curated guest experiences are Design Your Own Scottish Gin, hosted at Kingsbarns Distillery near St. Andrews. Besides sampling from a collection of gins (locally known as “mother’s ruin”), participants will attend gin school and be transformed, at least temporarily, into distillers while creating their own take-home bottle of bespoke gin blended with their choice of fragrant botanicals.
Other offered experiences include Fishing Upper North Wark in an area located between the villages of Kelso and Coldstream. This private, one-mile-long stretch of the River Tweed is renowned for exceptional fishing. Guests will be accompanied by a head ghillie (wilderness attendant) who will provide instruction in casting. Lunch is catered by a local chef and includes selected wines. Fishing from a traditional Tweed rowboat and braving the river in waders are also part of the fun.
For those traveling with family members, the Harry Potter Insider Tour includes an individualized foray to famed movie locations including Greyfriars Kirkyard, Edinburgh University, Spoon Cafe and Victoria Street — said to have inspired the mysterious Diagon Alley featured in the beloved book series by author J.K. Rowling.
