At the heart of New York City’s Hudson Yards neighborhood is Pendry Manhattan West, situated close to Hudson River Park and the sightseeing boat piers to the west, and the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden and Penn Station to the east.
The 23-story hotel houses 164 accommodations, including 30 suites, designed by Gachot Studios to be sleek and fitting with the brand’s boutique, modern vibe. Due to a bit of a mix-up at check-in, we were given a Skyline King room instead of a Skyline Double Double; however, there was still ample room for staff to set up a rollaway bed. The décor is calming yet warm, with a neutral palette and golden wood tones. A sitting area with a sofa and table adjacent to the floor-to-ceiling window is perfect for catching stellar views of that skyline. The king-sized bed is outfitted with a plush duvet cover and Fili d’Oro linens, while the spacious marble bathroom has a walk-in shower and MiN x Pendry bath amenities. The room was definitely comfortable and inviting.

This was the third Pendry I’ve experienced, along with Sagamore Pendry Baltimore in the city’s Fell’s Point neighborhood and Pendry Washington D.C. The Wharf, the latest outpost. One thing I’ve come to expect with this hotel brand is an ambitious drinks program and elevated dining — and this hotel delivers with four distinctive food and beverage concepts. Tucked in next to the lobby, Bar Pendry is a dimly lit, sexy cocktail lounge with a hidden speakeasy feel. An art installation by Nancy Lorenz on the back bar is the focal point, in which gold leaf, lacquer and mother-of-pearl are used to catch the light. Barstools are joined by sumptuous conversation sets around the room. On the menu are classic cocktails like a Manhattan and mojito as well as seasonal ones like the Haku Sour. Two zero-proof sips made with Lyre’s Non-Alcoholic Spirits speak to the trend of mindful drinking. There is also an all-day dining menu with steak frites, buttermilk fried chicken and shareables including beet salad and a cheese and charcuterie board.

Accessible from the lobby as well as an exterior entrance around the corner, Zou Zou’s is a 75-seat Eastern Mediterranean restaurant helmed by executive chef Juliana Latif. It’s a really pretty space with an open kitchen and wood-fired hearth, and a design drawing inspiration from the Levant region, with arches and domes, semi-circular plush burnt orange banquettes, warm globe and wrought-iron chandeliers, and lush greenery. When we arrived for dinner around 7 p.m. on a Friday evening, the bar was still packed with the after-work happy hour crowd, and the rest of the restaurant was buzzing. Be forewarned if you plan on carrying a conversation with a date or a group of friends: this resto is loud.
Drinks on the cocktail list are dotted with Mediterranean ingredients. I’m such a Negroni fan I had to try the “golden” riff, in which Suze stands in for Campari to add a bitter dryness balanced by apricot and Lillet Blanc, and turmeric lends an earthy flavor and namesake color. Everyone at Zou Zou’s seems to start with a selection of three or five dips with crudités and freshly baked pita. We could have made a meal just on spreads, but that would have meant missing out on Kumamoto oysters, local fluke ceviche with zhoug, and pickled radish. Mains and sides are designed to be shared. We devoured tender baby lamb chops in a smoked cherry sauce, and the flaky Turkish pastry known as borek stuffed with duck, orange and pistachios.

We didn’t experience it, but Chez Zou is another cocktail lounge, on the fourth floor above Zou Zou’s. Ditto for Garden Room, which offers an all-day menu of small bites and snacks, coffee service and cocktails, and Vista Lounge, where you can order a full breakfast.
If you’re so inclined, there’s a 24/7, 1,700-square-foot fitness center and movement studio with brand-new Technogym equipment, Peloton bikes and space for stretching and yoga.
