Celebrate Earth Month with a visit to Costa Rica. The Central American destination is known for its commitment to sustainability efforts, including the conservation of wildlife, forests and volcanoes. The country is home to more than 6 percent of the world’s total known biodiversity. Twenty-six percent of its land is zoned as protected territory.

Check out these five ways to travel sustainably during your next trip to Costa Rica.

Protect Sea Turtles

Sea turtle nesting season takes place year-round in Costa Rica, with July–October as the peak months. Many of these animals are at risk due to illegal egg harvesting. Volunteer alongside biologists and veterinarians in the hatching process, including nighttime patrols and transportation.

Save Rainforest Animals

Visit the rainforest wildlife sanctuary of the non-profit organization, Kids Saving the Rainforest. Learn about how the organization saves more than 130 abandoned animals annually through rehabilitation. Volunteer your time observing, monitoring and caring for these animals. Natuwa Wildlife Sanctuary and Las Pumas Rescue Center and Sanctuary also offer volunteer opportunities.

Stay in an Ecolodge

For an authentic Costa Rican experience, book a stay in an ecolodge. The lodging allows the guest to become fully immersed in nature. Guests may relax in the environmentally friendly accommodations while enjoying the natural surroundings of the mountains, rainforests, beaches and national parks.

Sustainable Diving Excursion

Costa Rica is home to excellent diving sites. Look for companies with Green Fins certification, a UN Environment Program Initiative. The program promotes conservation and sustainability on diving and snorkeling excursions.

Visit a Blue Flag Beach

A Blue Flag beach is a beach upholding sustainability standards as certified by the Foundation for Environmental Education based on factors including water quality, waste disposal, sanitary facilities, signage, tourist safety, environmental education and beach maintenance. Costa Rica is home to six beaches with five stars from the Foundation for Environmental Education: Matapalo, Punta del Madero, Playa Leona, Playitas and Playa Blanca.

Williamsburg Inn Review

You don’t have to love brass chandeliers or brocade to appreciate what Williamsburg Inn does best: delivering a polished, unpretentious stay amid America’s most iconic living history museum. This is where you check in for traditional luxury without feeling like you’re trapped in a time capsule. The Queen stayed here (twice), and so did Eisenhower, but you’re not here to make history. You’re here to enjoy it, on your own terms.
