While safety may be subjective, depending on the traveler’s experience and location, some metrics can be considered clear indicators for whether a destination is considered safe for foreigners.
The Economist Intelligence Unit released its list of 2019’s safest cities in the world, known as the Safe Cities Index. The list ranks 60 urban areas in terms of digital, health, infrastructure and personal security.
The highest rank goes to Tokyo at the top three times in the past five years. Other high-ranking Asian cities were Singapore (second place) and Osaka, Japan (third place). Rounding out the top 10 are Amsterdam; Sydney; Toronto; Washington, D.C.; Seoul and Copenhagen (tied for eighth place); and Melbourne.
The results showed a high correlation between the average income of citizens and safety rankings. With higher overall incomes comes the investment in creating and improving security systems throughout the city.
