Frequent travelers know the value of quality craftsmanship that stands up to the challenges of a life spent dashing through airports and navigating far-flung destinations. Made in England, the line from Cambridge Satchel is created by skilled craftsmen and artisans who use high-quality, sustainably and ethically sourced leather. The company’s selection of elegant and stylish handbags, wallets, brief cases, satchels and other goods embody British heritage, while offering superb quality carefully crafted into timeless silhouettes.

We recently caught up with Charlotte Seddon, head of Design, Cambridge Satchel, who shared with us the many reasons these luxury bags are ideal as gifts for sophisticated travelers.

Global Traveler: Tell us about Cambridge Satchel’s dedication to using British artisans.

Charlotte Seddon: Craftsmanship is at the heart of our brand. It’s one of the values we cherish most, and we’re committed to nurturing it by investing in our people and the skills they bring to the business. Many of our artisans have been with Cambridge Satchel for years, and their experience and care can be seen in every piece they make. There’s something special about knowing the same skilled hands that shape and finish each bag are what give it the strength and character to withstand the rigors of travel.

GT: What sets Cambridge Satchel apart from other luxury brands?

CS: What sets Cambridge Satchel apart is we remain one of a small number of British-made brands, and we’re incredibly proud of that heritage. We believe in practicing what we preach, which means championing British suppliers who share our values wherever possible. The majority of our leather, for example, is sourced from a Scottish tannery certified as producing low-carbon leather, while we also work with Scottish tartans and British wools. For us, sustainability is also about making thoughtfully and minimizing waste. Having our own workshop gives us greater control over the process and allows us to be mindful of every piece of material. Leather offcuts are repurposed into small leather goods, while rejected pieces are often given a second life through prototyping. Most importantly, we design and make our bags to last, the antithesis of fast fashion. When a well-loved bag does need some attention, our repair service means it can continue its journey rather than being discarded.

GT: What are your chief sources of inspiration for bag design?

CS: With our recent Meadow Collection, we wanted to reinvent the classic satchel for a different kind of customer: someone drawn to slow living, the bucolic English countryside and natural materials. This was the starting ground for a mood board, the beginning of the process where I can pour my creative references onto a visual board full of tear sheets, materials, key words and swatches of leather [and other materials]. It’s really important to start with a vision that evokes a “feeling” and “atmosphere” before going on to design stage. Much of the emphasis was from the bohemian, effortless legacy of Jane Birkin and the bucolic influence of Laura Ashley. There is also a nod to heritage, particularly the craft traditions of the 18th and 19th centuries.

More broadly, inspiration can come from anywhere: travel, historical fashion references, art. Much of the time it’s intuitive and comes from the environment I’m lucky enough to work in. A huge source of inspiration is the heart of the company itself: our workshop just outside Leicester.

I’m extremely fortunate to work so closely with our artisans and to be involved in the process from the very first idea through to the finished bag. That collaboration, and seeing an idea develop through the hands of the people who make it, is one of the most inspiring parts of designing for Cambridge Satchel.

GT: We know bags from Cambridge Satchel are beloved by celebrities and noted designers. What is your own favorite bag?

CS: My favorite bag would have to be the recent Meadow Bag. There is so much craftsmanship, and that shines through in the design. The edges are hand painted with intricate detailing, and we’ve used a first-grade, vegetable-tanned, full-grain leather with a beautiful aniline finish. It has this wonderful natural, waxy feel, something I particularly love about it. It means the bag will age gracefully, developing its own character and patina over time.

We’ve also introduced a number of new processes in the making of the bag, so although it has the unmistakable DNA of a Cambridge Satchel, there is something new and quite special about it. I love that sense of craftsmanship being visible in the finished piece, as you can really see and feel the hands and skill that have gone into making it.

Nature and Nordic Culture Ensure a Perfect Pace for Exploring Stockholm

Crowned the “Capital of Scandinavia,” Stockholm stands at the epicenter of modern Nordic movements that — much like their Viking forebears — have swept across the globe. From art to design to cuisine, the Swedish city entices business and leisure travelers alike. Also fitting for its Viking history: the capital’s waterfront positioning, situated across 14 islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. For a country that infamously sees little sunshine in the winter months, outdoor pursuits remain popular year-round, from hiking to sailing to ice-skating.

Review: Casa Gangotena

ARRIVAL/CHECK-IN: Facing one side of San Francisco Plaza in Quito’s Old Town, you’d be forgiven if you, at first, mistook the hotel for a palatial residence or estate, where the fourth or perhaps fifth generation of a family resides. Casa Gangotena, a Relais & Châteaux property, was, in fact, a home for many, built in the 17th century and later home to several presidents. The entrance reminds you you’re on very special grounds, from crown molding ceilings to opulent chandeliers to velvet couches, and staff guided me to check-in, beginning my very own regal stay.

Japan is a destination that rewards repeat visits because no two regions — or seasons —  feel quite the same. One moment, you’re wandering through centuries-old geisha districts in Kanazawa. The next, you’re watching neon reflections dance across Tokyo streets long after midnight.

Review: Caribe Royale Orlando

It’s truly its own universe: Caribe Royale Orlando is a sprawling property beckoning you forward with its coral pink exterior spanning many towers and buildings. The two-level lobby alone feels more like a community than a hotel lobby, with a Starbucks; access to the signature restaurant (in the midst of renovations), sports bar and gift shop; and a plethora of seating options. The bilevel layout also makes the entire space seem larger, opening up to the massive pool awaiting just behind the back doors.
