Wifox aims to simplify airport WiFi. The app collects WiFi passwords for networks in airports and airport lounges around the world, storing them in a single place. The app uses a global map interface to display airports with public WiFi networks. Users can access passwords and copy and paste them into their phones.
“I wanted to help travelers get online at the time they’re most vulnerable – when you first arrive at an airport,” said Anil Polat, app developer, Wifox. “Free or open networks at airports are often insecure or come with more serious privacy concerns, which I why Wifox shows you the lounge passwords as well as the correct network names for free WiFi, to prevent users from connecting to rogue hotspots.”
The app continually updates WiFi passwords through crowdsourcing. Users, including passengers, pilots, flight crew and others using airport or lounge WiFi networks, can make changes. The app uses color coding to show recently updated passwords. The app also displays information on the time limits airports impose for WiFi usage.
The app costs $1.99 and is available for iOS and Android. There’s also a free online version here.
