5 Shows to See in New York City Right Now

Once the seasonal crowd thins, theater in New York City sharpens as the stages take on a more deliberate pulse, gearing up for spring. If you’re in the city over the next couple of months, these five productions deserve your attention. Some are limited runs and some hinge on rotating casts, but together they span everything from immersive performance to emotionally unflinching drama to tightly constructed musical storytelling.

Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)

This sharp, small-scale musical at Longacre Theatre follows a British twenty-something and a no-nonsense New Yorker as they navigate Manhattan, and each other, while delivering a wedding cake. Fresh off a successful run at Kiln Theatre in London, Two Strangers made its Broadway transfer in November and has built steady momentum since. It’s one of the rare new musicals of late not driven by spectacle or IP, relying on just two actors and a multifunction set piece that regularly surprises. The writing is emotionally direct without being overly sentimental, bringing plenty of warmth and laughs.

Chess the Musical

At Imperial Theatre, Chess returns to Broadway with a cast that finally meets the scale and complexity of the material. Lea Michele delivers a commanding performance in a role that allows her full range as both singer and actor, and one that may finally bring her long-awaited Tony appreciation. Aaron Tveit and Nicholas Christopher complete the triangle with vocal precision and steady dramatic tension in this sharp realization of a famously demanding score. What once felt like a Cold War period piece now plays as a tightly wound political and personal standoff, supported by a reworked book from Danny Strong and direction by Michael Mayer.

Bug

Tracy Letts’s Bug, now at Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, traps two characters in a dim Oklahoma motel room and strips away everything but their belief systems. Carrie Coon and Namir Smallwood reprise roles they’ve honed through earlier productions, and the performances are as raw and committed as the material demands. What begins as tentative companionship escalates into shared paranoia, and the tension never eases as the production hurtles towards its climax. This is Bug’s first Broadway staging, and it arrives at a time when its themes of disinformation, isolation and psychological collapse land harder than ever. The run is limited, currently playing through early March.

Cole Escola in Oh, Mary! © Emilio Madrid

Oh, Mary!

Oh, Mary! is Cole Escola’s twisted send-up of Mary Todd Lincoln, staged at Lyceum Theatre with a tone that veers deliberately between unhinged and satisfyingly precise. The title role has rotated regularly since Escola’s departure, with past turns by the likes of Jane Krakowski, Jinkx Monsoon and Titus Burgess. John Cameron Mitchell takes the lead through April 26. The real star, though, is the show itself: a jagged, hilarious and structurally chaotic piece that uses theatrical form as much as dialogue to land its blows. No two performances are quite the same, and that’s the point.

Masquerade

Masquerade isn’t a show to watch. It’s one you move through. Set in a multifloor Midtown space, this immersive experience reimagines the Phantom of the Opera universe as a series of layered, shifting encounters. The design is ornate and intentionally disorienting, and under Diane Paulus’s direction, the entire evening works more like choreography than narrative. Intimate audiences follow an elegantly guided path through each scene, witnessing familiar characters at unnervingly close range. The experience is polished, unique and tightly contained, with a strict dress code of formalwear and masks adding to the dazzling ambiance and heightened sensations. Recently extended to early summer.

Revive and Relax at Finisterra Spa at Martinhal Sagres Family Beach Resort

Most visitors remember Portugal’s Algarve for its 100-plus miles of golden, sun-drenched beaches. We remember this southern coast of Portugal for the quiet, white-washed villages and dramatic cliffs of its far western corner. And for the superbly serene Finisterra Spa at Martinhal Sagres Family Beach Resort, where we first discovered what a massage and facial could do for aching shoulders and faces parched from days of hiking along the sun-washed clifftops. Neither I nor my husband, Tim, had been fans of spas before that trip, but Finisterra made us believers.
