Tucked discreetly behind a pair of lantern-lit doors on Rue de Bruxelles, Maison Souquet Hotel & Spa is a 5-star boutique property and part of the Collection Maisons Particuliers that reimagines the seductive elegance of a 19th-century maison close (a brothel) in one of Paris’s most decadent addresses, just steps from Moulin Rouge and Montmartre’s artistic and sensual atmosphere. The hotel honors the Belle Époque period and captures that romance, opulence and mystique of a bygone era, a world where pleasure was an art form.

The hotel, opened in 2015, offers 20 rooms, suites and apartments, which exude decadence with its Moorish-style lounge, velvet-draped furnishings and marble bathrooms with rainfall showers. Richly colored interiors were designed by Jacques Garcia, a noted French designer who reimagined the hotel as a lavish tribute to the hidden boudoirs and private salons of the Belle Époque period.

Featuring a secret spa, guests can find a hammam, a treatment room, and an exclusive and almost mythical 30-foot indoor pool under a star-studded ceiling, a hidden oasis beneath the hotel.       Maison Souquet’s renowned cocktail bar and three salons, the exotic Salon des Mille et Une Nuits, the cozy bar-library of the Salon des Petits Bonheurs and the serene Winter Garden, each provide a unique ambiance. These spaces offer intimate settings for dining and drinks, along with breakfast, lunch and dinner, although not in a traditional restaurant setting.

The 23-room Maison Proust, Hôtel & Spa La Mer is another 5-star luxury boutique hotel on the Rue de Picardie, nestled in the heart of the vibrant Marais neighborhood, and pays tribute to renowned novelist Marcel Proust. Also part of the Collection Maisons Particuliers, it is a short distance from the gardens of Palais Royal and Louvre Museum. Also designed by Jacques Garcia, the hotel revives the spirit of Proust’s Parisian salons, with each of its 23 rooms and suites dedicated to a figure from Proust’s world.

Interiors are layered with velvet, antiques and curated art, creating a cinematic ambiance. The hotel features a plush library; a bar with signature cocktails; a Winter Garden; and a hidden La Mer spa, inspired by the Orientalism of Aunt Léonie’s salons, where Proust spent part of his childhood.

At the bar, guests can taste excellent small dishes and sweets, and experience new cocktail selections, including Le Temps Retrouve, a creation inspired by Proust’s famous madeleine desserts that includes a 1922 Armagnac Chateau Laubade, Perigord and the freshness of a Barons de Rothchild Brut Nature Champagne. The spa and wellness space offers an indoor pool surrounded by tiled columns, a steam room and three treatment suites. Guests can treat themselves with La Mer’s iconic beauty products.

Review: Sushi by Scratch at Grand Hyatt Deer Valley

Husband-and-wife team Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee made their mark by reinventing the term “hidden gem” through their surprising and intentional collection of destination restaurants. While they launched the original Scratch Kitchen in 2013, an expired lease prompted them to relocate to an unassuming strip mall in suburban Encino in 2015 and rename it Scratch Bar & Kitchen. Even at a time when the San Fernando Valley was not known for innovative 5-star dining, the Lees’ concepts gathered such a strong buzz that discerning diners cheerfully followed them “over the hill.”
