I wish this day could last forever!” my windswept 9-year-old exclaimed, his voice soaring over the Mediterranean. He gripped the helm of a Bali 4.6 sailing catamaran off the coast of Marseille, his sun- bleached hair whipping in the salty breeze. The scent of the sea mingled with the aroma of warm baguettes drifting from the Côte d’Azur shoreline. Our captain, a seasoned sailor, subtly adjusted course, letting my son feel the exhilarating pull of the wind against the sails. As the waves lapped against the hull, I realized this was no ordinary vacation — this was freedom, unfiltered.
For decades, private yacht charters remained the pinnacle of luxury travel — reserved for the ultra-wealthy, experienced sailors or those with an entourage large enough to justify the cost. But as travel trends shift toward curated, experience-driven getaways, a new yachting model is making waves: by-the-cabin sailing.
With companies like Dream Yacht Worldwide leading the charge, travelers can now book a private cabin on a fully crewed yacht — no sailing experience required. It’s the perfect balance of luxury and adventure: all the elegance of a private yacht without the logistics or sky-high price tag of chartering an entire vessel.
That first taste of by-the-cabin sailing in Marseille ignited something in me: a hunger to take the experience further. What if I took it to the next level? What if I traded the Mediterranean’s sun- drenched shores for an expedition superyacht in the heart of the Galápagos?

I embarked solo on Aqua Expedition’s Aqua Mare, a stunning 168-foot superyacht and the first of its kind to offer year-round service in the Galápagos Islands. I reserved one of the seven cabins available and spent the week with five couples from various parts of the world.
Midway through our journey, we anchored in a secluded bay as a fiery glow lit the horizon. La Cumbre volcano on Fernandina Island began erupting, and without missing a beat, our captain scanned the water, swiftly adjusting course. On a traditional cruise, a sudden itinerary change means inconvenience. Aboard a boutique yacht, it’s an invitation to adventure.
As we sailed closer, the yacht glided through the darkened sea. Lava snaked down the mountainside, crashing into the ocean with a hiss of steam. The sky glowed an eerie orange. As we dined on ceviche, our glasses catching the fiery reflection, the hum of conversation faded to hushed awe. This wasn’t just a vacation … it was a moment no guidebook could promise.
What sets by-the-cabin sailing apart from traditional cruise ships is a private yacht charter’s intimate, customizable aspect. With only a handful of guests on board, travelers can immerse in local culture while enjoying personalized service from its dedicated crew.
And the best part? This type of yachting is not just limited to exotic destinations like the Mediterranean or Galápagos Islands. Companies like Dream Yacht Worldwide, The Moorings and PONANT offer by-the- cabin options in popular sailing regions such as the Caribbean and Southeast Asia.
Each guest enjoys a private en-suite cabin, full-board gourmet meals, carefully curated sailing routes that blend island-hopping with cultural excursions, and the opportunity to meet like-minded travelers.
While megaships cram thousands onto floating cities, by-the-cabin yachting restores the essence of luxury: freedom. No blaring announcements, no crowded decks, no rigid schedules. Here, time bends to your desires: Swim in a deserted cove, linger over a five- course dinner or simply soak in the silence. This is the “anti-cruise” — not just a different way to travel, but a new way to experience the world.
By-the-cabin yachting is surging, with DYW reporting a 15 percent increase in bookings for 2025. Top destinations? The Seychelles, the British Virgin Islands, Croatia and Thailand.
“These beautiful destinations offer diverse cultures, stunning landscapes and unparalleled sailing experiences with amazing itineraries to explore, making them ideal for travelers seeking to broaden their horizons and travel experiences,” said Loïc Bonnet, president, Dream Yacht Worldwide.
For travelers who crave exclusivity, flexibility and the untamed beauty of the open sea, by-the-cabin yachting invites you to experience the world on your terms. As demand soars, the future of luxury cruising may not lie in towering ships but in sleek catamarans and intimate superyachts gliding toward hidden harbors. The only question left is, where will you set sail first?
As the sun dipped below the horizon on my final night aboard Aqua Mare, I recalled my son’s wish in Marseille for the day to last forever. And for a moment, with the warm sea breeze on my skin and the gentle sway of the yacht beneath me, I thought maybe, just maybe, it can.
