The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko is slated for a 2020 debut as the brand’s first hotel in Japan set within a UNESCO World Heritage site.

“Today’s luxury traveler is increasingly seeking out unique experiences and the opportunity to become immersed in a destination’s culture. We are delighted to meet this need by opening exceptional properties in exciting new locations such as Nikko,” said Lisa Holladay, global brand leader, The Ritz-Carlton. “We will be working to curate a Nikko experience that truly showcases what is special about this destination while bringing to life and honoring its UNESCO heritage.”

Nikko is a short drive from Tokyo and a nature and cultural destination for its Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines and waterfalls. The property is planned for the eastern end of Lake Chuzenji, south of Mount Nantai, with easy access to the UNESCO World Heritage-designated area and national park. Designs include 94 guestrooms and suites with views of both the lake and mountains, an all-day dining restaurant, a lobby lounge and bar and Western-inspired restaurant. The Ritz-Carlton Spa will include private Japanese hot springs.

“Nikko has a long and rich history, making it an attractive destination for domestic travelers and a growing destination for overseas travelers looking to more deeply experience Japan and its culture,” said Paul Foskey, chief development officer, Asia Pacific, Marriott International. “We are truly excited to be collaborating with Tobu Railway Co., Ltd. to bring yet another unique resort to Japan.”

Mindfulness City in Kingdom of Bhutan Unveiled as Future Economic Hub

In front of an audience of 30,000 Kingdom of Bhutan residents and officials, His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck presented his vision for a new economic hub in Bhutan. Located between India to the south and China to the north, Bhutan is one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. Bhutan came late to global tourism.
