To increase connectivity options for passengers, South African Airways and Air China signed a new codeshare agreement. Under the terms of the new agreement, launching Oct. 29, SAA places its code on Air China’s newly inaugurated non-stop service between Beijing (PEK) and Johannesburg (JNB) as well as points beyond Beijing to Chengdu (CTU), Shanghai (PVG), Hangzhou (HGH) and Chongqing (CKG) and Air China places its code on SAA services between Johannesburg and Cape Town (CPT), Durban (DUR) and Port Elizabeth (PLZ).
The deal signals a strategic move by Air China to inaugurate services to the African continent and for SAA to grow its connectivity in the carrier’s already extensive African footprint. With this strategic partnership, Air China is able to connect its passengers to even more destinations on the continent and across the globe. This partnership between the flag carriers also strengthens historic, commercial, political and cultural ties between the two countries. Currently, China is South Africa’s largest trade partner.
