A number of the best and brightest in the travel industry this year say “I do” to the GT Tested Reader Survey awards, accepting their spots on the top of the cake as part of the elite party of winners. This year, 2015, marks the 12th anniversary of our reader-voted GT Tested Reader Survey awards as well as the fifth year we’ve held our ceremony honoring the winners at The Peninsula Beverly Hills.

Our readers joined in the celebration of these two milestone anniversaries by once again voting for their favorites when it comes to airlines, hotels, destinations, travel goods and services around the globe. In keeping with tradition, we proudly present for the first time the 2015 winners of the GT Tested Reader Survey awards.

Many theories circulate as to why the traditional gift for a first anniversary is paper, but we think its meaning as a symbol of natural and eternal growth is an apt characteristic of the winners taking their respective honors for the first time, or reclaiming the title again after some time away from the top spot. The newlyweds of 2015 follow.

When it comes to airlines and aircraft, Singapore Airlines reclaims the honor as Best Overall Airline in the World this year, while the Airbus A380 debuts for the first time as Best Aircraft Type. Cathay Pacific Airways and Virgin America are newbies in their first-class categories, as Best Airline for International First Class and Best Airline for Domestic First Class. With a brand-new design, China Airlines nabs the Best Flight Attendant Uniforms and Best Business-Class Seat Design titles. Etihad Airways plays counterpart, winning for Best First-Class Seat Design.

Venturing off to a new life is EVA AIR’s Houston (IAH) to Taipei (TPE) service, winner of Best Airline for New Service Launch. EVA AIR also won Best Airport Staff/Gate Agents. And making a commitment in front of the masses is Hawaiian Airlines, earning Best Frequent-Flyer Elite-Level Program for its HawaiianMiles Pualani Platinum Membership.

For the first time, glasses clink for Delta Air Lines, Best Airline in North America, and airberlin, Best Airline in Europe (in a tie) and Best Trans-Atlantic Airline. Joining them on the dance floor: Aeroflot (Best Airline in Eastern Europe), Air Tahiti Nui (Best Airline in the South Pacific) and Etihad Airways (Best Airline in the Middle East). American Airlines earned accolades for its Admirals Club, Best Airport Lounges.

When it comes to hotels celebrating one-year wins, The Ritz-Carlton made its presence known in this year’s survey, running away with three categories: Best International Hotel Chain, Best Domestic Hotel Chain and Best Hotel Website. In the affinity credit card redemptions column, The Ritz-Carlton Rewards Credit Card from Chase also took top honors.

Others in the hotel categories making things official in 2015 include Crowne Plaza Singapore Changi Airport, named Best Airport Hotel; Hilton HHonors as Best Frequent-Stay Bonus Program; Grand Hyatt, Best Hotel Chain in Asia; and Lotte Hotel Seoul as Best MICE Hotel. Lotte Hotel Seoul is also celebrating its fourth anniversary as Best Hotel in South Korea. Fittingly, its home city, Seoul, is a first-time winner as Best MICE City.

Travel is more than just hotels and airlines, and a number of newbies from travel providers to credit cards are vowing to stay on the list for years to come: Porsche (Best Overseas Delivery Program); T-Mobile (Best Wireless Service in the World); Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express (Best Frequent-Stay Affinity Credit Card Benefits); Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express (Best Frequent-Flyer Affinity Credit Card Benefits); and Celebrity Cruises Visa Signature Credit Card (Best Cruise Line Affinity Credit Card).

Settling into their spot as No. 1 on our survey are our second anniversary winners. Representing strength and adaptability, cotton is the traditional symbol for second anniversaries, and these winners fit the bill as innovative travel industry success stories.

JetBlue.com celebrates its second win as Best Airline Website, while Singapore Airlines claims another title: Best Airline for Business Class. Regionally, two-time winners include LAN Airlines, Best Airline to South America; Air India, Best Airline in Central/South Asia & India; All Nippon Airways, Best Airline to Japan; and United Airlines, Best Trans-Pacific Airline. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport rounds out the aviation section, winning Best Airport Dining two times over.

Cotton sheets, towels … these second-time hotel winners already utilize the traditional commemoration of the milestone. Honorees include Grand Hyatt Grand Clubs (Best Hotel Club Floor); Hilton HHonors Diamond (Best Frequent-Stay Elite-Level Program); Starwood Preferred Guest (Best Frequent-Stay Award Redemption); and Kempinski Hotels (Best European Hotel Chain).

Another couple celebrating a second anniversary is Hertz for Best Car Rental Company and Sony for Best Noise-Canceling Headset. Earning a second-time nod in the credit card department: Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select Card as Best Frequent-Flyer Affinity Credit Card Promotions.

While the traditional option for a third anniversary is leather, we’re going with the more modern interpretation, glass, just like those sparkling awards we’ll hand all our big winners. Nine winners are finding bliss as third-time honorees across all the categories. A trifecta of frequent-flyer award recipients includes United MileagePlus (Best Frequent-Flyer Bonus Program); LifeMiles (Avianca TACA) (Best Frequent-Flyer Award Redemption); and Delta Air Lines SkyMiles (Best Frequent-Flyer Customer Service, Americas).

Air New Zealand, China Airlines and Hainan Airlines are the cream of the crop three years running as Best Airline to Australia and New Zealand, Best Airline in North Asia and Best Airline in China, respectively.

Hilton HHonors takes home the top spot for Best Frequent-Stay Customer Service, Americas yet again. The last of the three-timers includes Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express (Best Frequent-Stay Affinity Credit Card Promotions) and United MileagePlus Explorer Card from Chase (Best Frequent-Flyer Affinity Credit Card Redemptions).

Order up five dozen red roses, or any flower, which is the traditional symbol of the fourth anniversary, for these five four-time winners: Ireland, Best Tourism Destination; United MileagePlus Club Card from Chase, Best Credit Card and Best Credit Card Rewards Program; Marriott Rewards Credit Card from Chase, Best Frequent-Stay Affinity Credit Card; and Alaska Airlines Visa Signature Card from Bank of America, Best Frequent-Flyer Affinity Credit Card.

Five years as a reigning champion is a milestone, and we’ll celebrate these fifth-anniversary celebrants with a traditional gift of wood. TAP Portugal (tied this year with airberlin) is once again the Best Airline in Europe, while Boingo Wireless earns its fifth nod as Best WiFi Service, and Fiesta Americana is crowned Best Hotel Chain in Mexico. Not only is The Peninsula Beverly Hills our host venue for the fifth consecutive year, it is also the five-time Best Hotel in the United States.

Sweetness and strength are hallmarks of the sixth anniversary, represented in gift form by either of the traditional options of candy or iron. Six-time winner oneworld shows strength in numbers as Best Airline Alliance, and Alitalia serves up both sweet and savory as Best Airline Cuisine.

Also dominating their categories for six years running: Best Airline in Mexico winner Aeromexico; Andaz as Best Lifestyle Hotel; and Best Luggage Brand titleholder Briggs & Riley.

While no winners can claim victory for the seventh or eighth straight time, we thought you’d still like to know what traditional gifts to bestow upon your sweetheart when you commemorate these milestone anniversaries. For seventh anniversaries, tradition dictates a wool or copper gift, while the eighth requires either pottery or something bronze.

Not only are our nine-time winners celebrating the willow/wicker anniversary, they are nearing entry into our history books. The 12th anniversary represents stability, much like these winners, who have won these categories for the entire existence of our GT Tested Reader Survey. The traditional gift of silk signifies luxury and comfort, summing up the mission of both these 12-time winners and of Global Traveler. Asiana Airlines once again earns top marks for its service as Best Airline for Onboard Service and Best Airline for Flight Attendants. United MileagePlus is the Best Overall Frequent-Flyer Program 12 times over, South African Airways remains Best Airline in Africa, and last but most certainly not least, Chicago O’Hare continues to receive accolades as Best Airport in North America, while Sheraton Hotels & Resorts is top choice for Best Hotel Chain in Latin America.

Wines on the Wing 2015
The results of Global Traveler’s annual Wines on the Wing Airline Wine Competition were first released in our August 2015 issue. A number of airlines submitted samples of their in-flight wine and sparkling selections. Sixteen professional wine experts presided as judges over the annual competition. All Nippon Airways was awarded several accolades: Best International Business-Class Wines on the Wing, Best International First-Class Wines on the Wing, Best International First-Class Champagne and Best International First-Class White Wine (tied with American Airlines). Hainan Airlines won Best Business-Class Champagne. Other winners included Fiji Airways (Best International First- or Business- Class Sparkling Wine and Best International Business-Class Red Wine); British Airways (Best International Business-Class White Wine); American Airlines (Best International First-Class Red Wine); and oneworld (Best Airline Alliance Wines on the Wing). In the North American category, Delta Air Lines won Best North American Wines on the Wing and Best North American White Wine, while Virgin America earned honors for Best North American Sparkling Wine and Best North American Red Wine.

The Voting Process
Open-ended ballots ran in subscriber copies of Global Traveler and online at globaltravelerusa.com/survey from Jan. 1 to Aug. 31, 2015. Ballots were distributed via direct mail and email during the same period. Ballots returned with less than 50 percent of the fields completed were disqualified. More than 22,000 qualified ballots were returned during the voting period. Employees of FX Express Publications, Inc., and affiliated members of the travel industry were not allowed to participate.
