Belgium’s charm and allure sparkles with five new museums in Mons. The 17th-century UNESCO World Heritage site at the Belfry of Mons (known locally as “el catiau”) is now open. Climb 365 steps leading to the sandstone and blue stone tower’s 49 bells, and then treat yourself to some great Belgium chocolate sans calorie-related guilt. Next, head to the Artotheque to peruse the art and history collections and Neolithic artifacts housed in the beautiful chapel of a former Ursulines convent.
At the Doudou Museum, embrace the celebration dedicated to St. George’s victory over the infamous dragon. The UNESCO World Heritage event features a reenactment of the legend on May 31 in city’s central square, complete with dragon. Also related to battles (the real kind), the Mons Memorial Museum explores local skirmishes, the greater story of war and its effect on humanity. Last but not least, the new Silex museum, built atop Neolithic flint mines in Spiennes, offers interpretations of how the human race and its myriad cultures have evolved over the centuries. Guided tours of the original mine are available when requested in advance.
