Philadelphia Flower Show

Mar 6, 2015

Every evening as I drive home after work along I-95, I spot a billboard for the 2015 Philadelphia Flower Show. An area institution each year, I’ve been to shows in the past, but what intrigued me about the billboard this year was the theme — all of the displays were inspired by films from Disney and Disney Pixar. Last Sunday, I decided to check it out. It runs through tomorrow, so if you happen to be in the Philadelphia area, make time to visit! IMG_2547 IMG_2544 I’ve always been a fan of Disney movies, and some of the familiar names gracing displays at this year’s show, held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, included Winnie the Pooh, Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, The Quiet Man, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and Maleficent. My favorites were Fantasia, Nightmare Before Christmas and the section devoted to Disney princesses. Orange roses formed pumpkins, and special peepholes showcased black-lit flowers in the Nightmare display. The dancing mops from the first-ever Disney film, as well as the sorcerer’s hat, were prominent at the Fantasia booth. And princess displays included a magic carpet of flowers for Jasmine, rich red roses and an apple for Snow White, and glass bubbles with flower displays inside for Ariel. IMG_2546 IMG_2536 IMG_2535 The Philadelphia Flower Show proved the perfect way to while away a few hours on a snowy Sunday afternoon; it seemed many agreed, as the floor was full of other attendees of all ages. My only complaint? I wanted more flowers and displays and less vendors. With a Disney theme, I can only imagine there was much more in the way of imaginative displays that could have been included. — Kim Krol, managing editor

Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a small town that’s big on historic landmarks, buildings, parks and Western lore.
