After Australia issued a travel warning for Indonesia, the local hospitality industry struck back against what they call “sensationalized” claims. On June 17, Australia issued a warning urging residents to exercise a high degree of caution when traveling to Indonesia and, if planning travel to Central Sulawesi, Papua or West Papua, to reconsider. The warning states Indonesia is experiencing sporadic transmission of Zika, and extreme caution is necessary, including in Bali, a popular seasonal destination for Australians. The Bali Hotels Association issued a statement in response June 22. The Association refers to the travel warning as “sensationalized through the Australia media,” and assures travellers there is no need to worry regarding the Zika virus, per the Indonesian Ministry of Health. The statement further states the Australian travel warning system often reports information that is hearsay, rather than fact. The World Health Organization issued a Zika update June 23 naming Indonesia as a country where there is evidence of Zika virus transmission prior to 2015, with or without ongoing transmission.
