The picturesque city of Zwickau is home to the newly magnified August Horch Museum, with riveting exhibitions detailing more than a century of car production in the German state of Saxony. That includes the history of the Audi brand: The museum — a local institution for 25 years — utilizes a space that was the original Audi factory. In its early days, the factory also produced Trabants, easily recognizable by their distinctive body shape and association with the former East Germany.
The new expansion adds 38,000 square feet to the museum space, housed in a separate space built in 1910 that also served as part of the old Audi factory. Connected to the original museum via a glass foyer, the new space includes a restaurant, education facility, exhibition space and a hands-on experience center where visitors can test their mechanical prowess tuning a Trabant, view a race of Auto Union cars known as Silver Arrows and view the production process of the GDR-era Trabants.
Guided tours can be scheduled with English-speaking guides, and audio guides in English are available. The tours also include a visit to the villa once home to August Horch, located on the factory grounds. Build in time for a driving-themed expedition while you’re there: Zwickau is located in an auto history-rich area of Germany, not far from the manufacturing centers of Porsche, BMW and Volkswagen, located in Leipzig and Dresden.

May 6, 2024Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History
All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.
