Will Future Travel Drive Itself?

News

The next gen of transportation is speeding up, with supersonic travel, self-driving cars, space travel all on the table.

Some travelers are not all-in on high-tech transport, as interest levels for travel through space via flying car is relatively low. A lack of familiarity with technology isn’t contributing to disinterest, but it’s more of a question about safety. According to a survey released by Allianz Global Assistance, safety concerns overshadowed the excitement around next generation transportation.

“While transportation technology is poised to change the way Americans travel, safety has emerged as a top concern,” said Daniel Durazo, director of communications, Allianz Global Assistance USA. “We expect consumers to be more hesitant in adopting new technologies like the artificial intelligence steering self-driving vehicles than they might be with existing technologies such as space and supersonic travel that have been developed but are not yet available to the masses.”

Sixty-five percent of those surveyed expressed disinterest in trying out new self-driving technology because of safety concerns. Traveling into the future, however, 64 percent said self-driving cars will develop to be safe enough for them to consider using, which includes other futuristic models of travel like self-driving cars and flights to space.

Around 64 percent of people believe hyperloop high-speed rail travel will be a safe travel method in the future. Supersonic travel is perceived as safe down the road, with 56 percent expressing interest, while 51 percent believe space travel will be safe someday.
