The U.S. Department of Homeland Security utilized facial recognition scans at many U.S. airports in the past year, an initiative that may be implemented nationwide.
JetBlue and New York JFK trialed facial recognition in recent years and became more advanced in facial biometric entry and exit. The end goal is to develop a process where passengers go from destination to destination without ever showing a boarding pass.
There are two sides to the biometric entry debate. While the current administration wishes to secure borders and collect more data from international travelers, many privacy advocates are concerned travelers’ rights are being violated. With recent and ongoing backlash against companies such as Facebook for improperly sharing and using personal data from its users, facial scans utilized by government agencies may be a tough sell to many travelers.
While some may be reluctant, implementing biometric facial scans could greatly reduce airport traffic and reduce time spent moving through security and boarding at gates. The trials show some airports have processed 400 passengers in as little as 22 minutes.
