According to a new fromAtoB study, Japan’s prime minister Shinzō Abe has the highest carbon emissions of any G20 leader in attendance at the world summit. The study compared international flights taken by G20 heads of state to determine who has the largest carbon footprint.

Prime minister Abe’s round-trip came out on top in burning the most fuel and producing the most waste. In 2018, the world leader took 38 flights in his Boeing 747-400, traveling 128,000 miles, producing nearly 14,500 tons of CO2 gas.

U.S. President Trump came in second in creating the most waste through personal travel, with 81,400 miles flown, emitting nearly 11,550 tons of CO2 gas. President Trump took 16 international flights in 2018.

Angela Merkel took 83 flights, most short-haul flights and not the most carbon-producing of the bunch. French President Emmanuel Macron took 77 flights in 2018, while Theresa May took 51 flights.

While number of flights and miles flown account toward a large carbon footprint, the type of aircraft flown has a significant impact on carbon emissions. With all aspects considered, President Trump’s Boeing 747-200B emitted the most CO2 gas — 0.09 tons per square kilometer.

While as a country, China accounts for the largest portion of CO2 emissions in the world, President Xi Jinping was not the most waste-producing offender.
