Last year saw a slew of incidents regarding turbulence, from the Singapore Airlines flight from London (LHR) to Singapore (SIN) to the LATAM Airlines flight between Sydney (SYD) and Auckland (AKL).
While these individual occurrences were extreme enough to make news, what routes and airports actually saw the most cases of turbulence in 2024? Turbulence forecast website turbli.com recently revealed its findings of the most turbulent routes and airports last year. The study analyzed about 10,000 routes connecting the 550 largest airports in the world.
The most turbulent routes in the world of 2024 were:
- Mendoza (MDZ)–Santiago (SCL)
- Cordoba (COR)–Santiago (SCL)
- Mendoza (MDZ)–Salta (SLA)
- Mendoza (MDZ)–San Carlos de Bariloche (BRC)
- Kathmandu (KTM)–Lhasa (LXA)
- Chengdu (CTU)–Lhasa (LXA)
- Santa Cruz (VVI)–Santiago (SCL)
- Kathmandu (KTM)–Paro (PBH)
- Chengdu (CTU)–Xining (XNN)
- San Carlos de Bariloche (BRC)–Santiago (SCL)
In North America, routes between Albuquerque (ABQ) and Denver (DEN), Denver and Jackson (JAC), Jackson and Salt Lake City (SLC), and Denver and Salt Lake City ranked as the most turbulent.
Turbli also looked at the most turbulent airports in 2024, comparing about 550 of the largest airports in the world and computing average turbulence over a volume of about 120 miles in diameter and 20,000 feet in height centered 10,000 feet above the airport.

- Mendoza (MDZ)
- Salta (SLA)
- Kathmandu (KTM)
- Lhasa (LXA)
- Paro (PBH)
- Xining (XNN)
- Denver (DEN)
- Kabul (KBL)
- Bozeman (BZN)
North America’s most turbulent airports in 2024 included Denver, Bozeman, Albuquerque (ABQ), Salt Lake City (SLC), Jackson (JAC), Las Vegas (LAS), Vancouver (YVR) and Reno (RNO).
