Washington Reagan National Airport’s antiquated and chaotic Gate 35/35X will soon undergo a massive change in the way of an entirely new concourse.
Currently, the gate serves as a waiting point before passengers are led down an escalator where buses wait to take them to smaller commuter planes. The new terminal is a $400-million project led by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, will focus on abolishing this overcrowded gate and developing new, more spacious ways for travelers to access gates.
As part of a larger, airport-wide renovation with a price tag of $1 billion, the new terminal also will open more retail and restaurants located on the other side of security. Most dining and shopping options currently are located in the main hall, before passengers pass through security and travel to their departure gates. Other changes will include a new parking garage opposite the airport’s entrance and a new lease sharing agreement between DCA and Washington Dulles International Airport.
