The future of aircraft design is here and it’s virtual windows. Real windows impact the structure of an airplane, making it weaker and slower while burning more fuel. If windows were replaced by virtual windows, airplanes could fly faster, weigh less and burn less fuel — thus making planes more efficient with potentially less expensive airfare.
Instead of looking outside through glass, virtual windows would stream images passengers may be able to customize.
This concept is already available on Emirates’ new Boeing 777-300ER jets. The suites in the middle section of the first-class cabin do not ordinarily have a window, but instead boast fiber-optic technology to beam in images from the outside.
