Virgin Atlantic will now have a hand-baggage only fare tier. It’s also adding upgraded economy seats.

The changes mean the airline will have three different economy classes going forward. On the lowest end, there will be Economy Light, the HBO product matched by Delta, which owns 49 percent of Virgin Atlantic. More rivals will follow next month.

Economy Classic will mirror the economy-class tier as it currently exists with added free-seat assignment, priority check-in and boarding. At the higher end, Economy Delight offers passengers three more inches of legroom.

It remains unclear whether or not HBO tariffs will be limited to trans-Atlantic routes.The airline said pricing details would be available at a later date.

Craig Kreeger, chief executive, Virgin Atlantic, said, “We’re unveiling the biggest change to our economy cabin in over a decade – launching three new ways to fly and a host of other innovations on the ground and in the air as part of a wider £300 million investment in our customers. Customers can afford to be choosy and still travel in the UK’s leading economy cabin.”
