United Airlines makes several big announcements including new routes, improved customer service initiatives and premium-economy plans.

Routes
The airline announced new service between six of its domestic hubs and eight destinations in California, Ohio, North Dakota, South Dakota, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The new flights, beginning June 7, include Chicago (ORD)–Bismarck, N.D. (BIS); Denver (DEN)–Appleton, Wis. (ATW); Houston (IAH)–Dayton, Ohio (DAY); Los Angeles (LAX)–Eureka, Calif. (ACV); and San Francisco (SFO)–Madison, Wis. (MSN).

United will also offer the only non-stop flight between New York (EWR) and Rapid City, S.D. (RAP), beginning June 23.

Free Checked Bags
United eliminated charges for customers’ second checked bag on all routes from North America to China and Hong Kong. To celebrate the new benefit and the upcoming Chinese New Year, United also offers special low fares (united.com/China and united.com/HongKong) to China and Hong Kong, valid now through Feb. 16, and April 2–June 10.

Customer Service
One of the most frustrating things for airline customers is lack of information concerning delayed or canceled flights. In response to this, United tests a new system called Every Flight Has a Story in Phoenix and Houston. Through Feb. 16, customers delayed at least an hour will receive detailed information via text, email and the airline’s mobile app telling them why the flight was delayed.

Premium Economy
Joining rival carriers American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, United plans to launch a premium-economy class on international flights.

United Premium Plus passengers will have more spacious seats, free alcoholic beverages and a Saks Fifth Avenue blanket, pillow and amenity kit.

Fares and specific routes were not yet announced.
