United Airlines rolled out its new basic economy fare, providing a lower-cost option with many of the same in-flight services and amenities available with standard economy, including food and beverages, WiFi and in-flight entertainment.

The new product is currently only available to and from domestic hubs, before it expands to the rest of the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America. Customers traveling between Minneapolis (MSP) and any of United’s seven U.S. hubs can purchase the basic economy fare.

Basic economy customers will be seated in the main cabin; checked baggage policies remain the same, and baggage benefits for MileagePlus members and credit card members still apply. MileagePlus members will still earn award miles on basic economy flights, but cannot earn Premier qualifying credit including miles, segments, dollars or lifetime miles.

What are the drawbacks to United’s new basic economy fare? Seats will be automatically assigned prior to boarding and customers are limited to one personal item, are not eligible for cabin upgrades and will be the last boarding group. Exceptions apply.
