In a statement made at the end of August, United Airlines announced award miles would never again expire. Customers have a lifetime to use award miles for things like flights, hotels and other experiences.
“We want to demonstrate to our members that we are committing to them for the long-haul and giving customers a lifetime to use miles is an exceptionally meaningful benefit,” said Luc Bondar, vice president of loyalty and president of MileagePlus, United.
Before this change, miles expired 18 months after a customer’s last account activity. Now, passengers can go without travel for extended periods without fear of losing miles.
In addition to removing limitations on the timing of miles usage, United is enhancing its MileagePlus program. Some of the highlight features include a partnership with CLEAR, more award travel destinations, lower-priced economy awards and more opportunities to use miles, including gift cards.
