Despite Airbnb’s rapid expansion and takeover of the world’s home-sharing community, subsequently changing the landscape of travel accommodations, the international powerhouse is experiencing a few growing pains.

Data and research firm eMarketer predicted a drop in the total number of travelers making reservations using the site — a decrease of approximately 5 million fewer guests this year compared with original annual projections (38.4 million users compared with the original figure, 43.2 million users).

Despite backlash from Airbnb about the findings from this report, it’s becoming clear the formerly touted benefits of posting vacation rentals on such websites are becoming more of a hassle for property owners. Local municipalities are placing heavy restrictions on property owners renting out their spaces, including limitations to the number of days per year the property can be occupied by anyone other than the owner or leaseholder.

At the same time, larger cities noticed rental prices increasing due to the competitive prices of short-term Airbnb rentals.

Airbnb may be the default lodging option for many, but the future of the company remains to be seen as local residents and governments begin to step in.
