Uber Black, Uber’s premium ride service, recently added an option in the United States that helps riders who want to sit in silence.
The ride-hailing app now allows riders booking premium Uber Black and Uber Black SUV rides a Quiet Mode option, signaling to drivers they’re not interested in a conversation while they ride. Alternatively, passengers can pick “happy to chat” or “no preference” in the app.
Uber drivers don’t seem to mind the addition.
“The reaction of Uber Black drivers was overwhelmingly positive because they want to deliver a great experience to their rider … but they don’t necessarily know what the rider wants,” said Aydin Ghajar, product manager, Uber. “These guys take a lot of pride in what they do as customer service agents.”
The app has other updates, too. The new version tells the driver if you are carrying luggage with you, as well as lets you select your air conditioning preferences — naturally, these are all features that also help passengers avoid talking to their drivers.
