Last week, the United States began enforcing new changes to the Visa Waiver Program to create a higher standard of travel safety and border protection, the Department of Homeland Security Office of Public Affairs announced.

These changes will affect travelers who are nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or from certain Middle Eastern countries from March 1, 2011, onward, including Iran, Iraq, Sudan and Syria. Also included are nationals of VWP countries who hold dual citizenship in Iran, Iraq, Sudan and Syria. Additionally, any current Electronic System for Travel Authorizations will be revoked for these individuals with dual citizenship.

However, it is possible for individuals falling under the above conditions to seek a visa under typical U.S. immigration processes. They will then be required to undergo the standard interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

Under the changes, the Secretary of Homeland Security is also able to waive restrictions on a case-by-case basis if such need arises. Individuals that may be eligible for restrictions to be waived include those traveling to the countries and regions outlined for official business, humanitarian efforts and journalistic purposes.

It was noted the majority of VWP travelers will not be affected by this change and that the changes do not entirely limit travel to or admission into the United States, as exceptions on a case-by-base basis have been provided as outlined above.

It is expected a new Electronic System for Travel Authorization application will be released in February in order to make admittance processes smoother for those who have been affected by these new changes by including relevant application inquiries concerning military and diplomatic travel to the countries and regions in question.
