The latest partial government shutdown began Dec. 22, 2018, and is in its third week. Necessary functions continue, while superfluous functions, like the opening of national parks, have been put on hold.
The Transportation Security Administration is one of the services still functioning. Security officials work to screen airline passengers and keep skies safe, but since the shutdown began, they have been doing so without guaranteed pay.
Airport screeners across the country entered their third week of working without a paycheck, according to reporting from wtsp.com, the website for a Tampa news station. According to interviews conducted by the station, TSA agents argued it seemed politicians were playing with their lives. Agents mentioned the shutdown’s impact on morale.
Reports from the Huffington Post confirm low morale among agency employees, and mention several members consider leaving their position. Federal workers who work through shutdown are expected to receive back pay, but have no confirmed payday.
According to a release from the Democratic Senate Appropriations Committee, more than 420,000 workers are left without pay throughout the shutdown, including 53,000 TSA employees.
“Travelers will see no difference in security. TSA officers, TSA canine handlers and their canines, TSA explosives experts, TSA inspectors — all frontline security personnel — will be working. They will not be getting paid during the furlough,” the agency said in a statement.

Mar 28, 2024Cruise Lines Elevate the Onboard Fine-Dining Experience
It’s been a long time since the food on cruise ships resembled the bland, uninspired fare that gave onboard dining a bad name. These days, cruise passengers can look forward to menus created by Michelin-starred chefs made with top-quality ingredients served in stunning spaces. Choices abound as well. In addition to elegant main dining rooms, cruise ships have created a huge array of specialty restaurants that focus not only on perfectly executed traditional European and North American dishes but flavors and experiences from around the globe as well. In fact, meals served aboard cruise vessels have gotten so good, they’re drawing passengers onto ships: According to a recent report by luxury travel planning network Virtuoso, advisors report after Europe (specifically Italy and France), the No. 2 dining destination for travelers is aboard an ocean or river cruise. “This shows how cruise lines have really stepped up their culinary game, with consulting chefs and new restaurants and making that a focal point,” said Misty Belles, vice president, Global Public Relations, Virtuoso.
