With the track and switch work occurring at New York’s busy Penn Station, delays and service disruptions continue to increase.

After a series of infrastructure-related service disruptions in the station, Amtrak announced plans to take three tracks out of service for most of July and August to renew aging track infrastructure. In what is described as a potential summer of hell, a heavily modified schedule was released for services in and out of the station over the next few months.

“While we regret that this work requires some reduction in train service and disruption to passengers over the summer months, we believe it will ultimately be worth the investment in terms of increased reliability of passenger rail travel,” said Wick Moorman, former chief executive officer and president, Amtrak. “[The railroad would] use all the tools we can, such as lengthening trains, to continue to provide capacity for our intercity travelers going to or from New York.”

The plan requires the Long Island Rail Road, Penn’s primary tenant, to reduce rush-hour service into and out of Penn by about 20 percent. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced a mitigation plan to deal with the service cuts that includes supplementing train service with buses and ferries.

Three daily round-trip Northeast Regional trains will be canceled between New York and Washington, D.C., July 10–Sept. 1, according to Amtrak; however, service on the trains between New York and Boston will operate as normal. Service will continue on Amtrak’s Keystone Service between Philadelphia and Harrisburg, but three daily round-trip trains will now start and end in Philadelphia and one will start and end in Newark, N.J., rather than Penn Station. Service will also be cut back on local commuter rail service at Penn Station, including New Jersey Transit and LIRR.
