Stately and serene, DUKES LONDON has been a landmark of luxury lodging since its doors opened to discerning guests in 1908. Set within a private cul de sac off St. James Place in the Mayfair district, the hotel’s flower-bedecked entrance sets the tone for an elegant stay. Within, spaces are replete with arrangements of blooms in alabaster hues reflecting the Royal Family’s preference for the white blossoms that grace interiors throughout the palace.
Buckingham Palace is a mere five-minute stroll away, and during my recent visit I discovered that other royal connections include heavenly scented bath and body care products created by Floris, a company holding a prestigious Royal Warrant. The Floris brand’s flagship store is located a pleasant walk away at 89 Jermyn St., in a spot where founders Juan Famenias Floris and his wife Elizabeth once sold a selection of perfumes and shaving products.
While exploring and experiencing the property, it became clear why DUKES LONDON is the recipient of the World’s Ultimate Service Award: From check-in to check-out, everyone whom I encountered in every area — from dining room staff to housekeeping — made me feel like a treasured guest, rather than a temporary resident. Experience the hotel’s superlative service with a stay in one of the new deluxe rooms that meld classic elements with contemporary touches, or in a spacious room or suite that immerses you in the best of traditional British charm. A selection of rooms are dog-friendly and the hotel offers a full range of complementary services, ranging from dog sitting and walking to grooming, turndown treats and personal shopping. Four-legged guests are pampered with two gourmet meals a day, along with fresh mineral water.
Guests can enjoy excellent dining in Great British Restaurant, where Michelin-starred Head Chef Nigel Mendham is the force behind a menu that celebrates the best local and regional ingredients. Enjoy the property’s quintessential afternoon tea service in the glass-roofed conservatory or in the newly updated Drawing Room. For fine weather, the kitchen will prepare a GBR Ploughman’s Picnic that can be savored in the Royal Parks, served on a soft blanket by a DUKES private butler. Suites equipped with dining rooms are the perfect place to enjoy a meal in comfort and privacy before heading to DUKES Bar for a signature cocktail prepared by martini master Alessandro Palazzi. Should you be inclined, the Cognac and Cigar Garden is open 6–11 p.m., each day.

Mar 28, 2024Cruise Lines Elevate the Onboard Fine-Dining Experience
It’s been a long time since the food on cruise ships resembled the bland, uninspired fare that gave onboard dining a bad name. These days, cruise passengers can look forward to menus created by Michelin-starred chefs made with top-quality ingredients served in stunning spaces. Choices abound as well. In addition to elegant main dining rooms, cruise ships have created a huge array of specialty restaurants that focus not only on perfectly executed traditional European and North American dishes but flavors and experiences from around the globe as well. In fact, meals served aboard cruise vessels have gotten so good, they’re drawing passengers onto ships: According to a recent report by luxury travel planning network Virtuoso, advisors report after Europe (specifically Italy and France), the No. 2 dining destination for travelers is aboard an ocean or river cruise. “This shows how cruise lines have really stepped up their culinary game, with consulting chefs and new restaurants and making that a focal point,” said Misty Belles, vice president, Global Public Relations, Virtuoso.
