China’s New Year celebration and Spring Festival period saw unparalleled growth, according to recently released data from China National Tourism Administration.

CNTA reported double-digit growth during the first four days of the Lunar New Year holiday alone, with more than a quarter of a billion domestic trips taken in China, a 14.2 per cent increase compared to the corresponding period last year.

Chinese nationals took more than 350 million trips during the seven-day Spring Festival period, which includes the Lunar New Year. Three hundred forty-four million domestic trips and 6.2 million international trips were taken, marking a growth of 14 per cent and 7 per cent respectively, compared to 2016.

These totals indicate 50 million domestic and overseas trips taken every day during the seven-day holiday.

China’s Spring Festival, the world’s largest annual migration, is not only an opportunity for family reunions and cultural celebrations but tourism as well. CNTA reported tourism revenues of CNY423.3 billion ($61.7 billion) during the week-long holiday, up 16 per cent from last year.

The Spring Festival is one of two major travel periods in Mainland China, along with the annual Golden Week which takes place in October and brought in 589 million travellers in 2016.
