Tips for Business Travelers During the Holidays

Despite its headaches, holiday travel is exciting. It means seeing friends, family and loved ones you don’t see on a regular basis. Unfortunately, holiday revelers aren’t the only people in the airports and on the roads around the holidays.

Business travel is particularly daunting between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, especially for those booking their own trips. Not only are business travelers on the go when they’d likely rather be home celebrating, but factors like weather, delays and higher prices make travel feel like even more work than usual.

Online travel booking service Upside wants business travelers to know they’re not forgotten at this time of the year.

“All the focus this time of year is on holiday-related travelers. But business goes on during the holiday period, and so does business travel,” said Jay Walker, cofounder, chairman and CEO, Upside. “They must be at their destinations on-time and, for them, a delay or flight cancellation isn’t an inconvenience, it can be a deal-breaker. The onslaught of high-volume travel over the holidays presents a real challenge for them, both scheduling and cost-wise.”

Based on the travel issues Upside monitors when helping DIY bookers plan trips, here are some tips if you’re traveling for business around the holidays:

  • Look at the 15-day or longer forecast, and consider rescheduling if bad weather is a possibility.
  • Keep your travel itinerary handy at all times. Take a smartphone screenshot of your confirmation emails and add them to your business travel calendar invites, or write them on the back of a business card in your wallet.
  • Prepare a back-up plan. If your flight is canceled, have an idea beforehand of other flights or transportation options.
  • Utilize secondary airports. Airfares may be a bit higher, but it might mean less congestion.
  • Arrange a ride to the airport; don’t assume there will be parking.
  • Book ground transportation from the airport in advance. Waiting lines for rentals and other forms of transportation will be longer than usual.
  • Make sure hotel reservations guarantee late arrival. That way if there’s a delay, your room will still be waiting.

As frequent business travelers know, preparation is key for every work-focused trip, but taking a few extra precautions during the holidays will save you time and eliminate (or at least minimize) stress.
