Situated within the Chianti hills of Tuscany lies Vignamaggio, a restored, Renaissance-era estate that now invites travelers to explore its vineyards, olive groves, farmhouse villas, farm and more following a decade-long restoration project. The estate, in operation for more than 600 years, is linked by legend to Leonardo da Vinci and the Mona Lisa.

Spanning 65 hectares of rolling vines, the estate features ancient wine cellars producing the region’s finest Chianti Classico. Also on the property sits Il Borgo, a 14th-century villa lovingly restored to become a stunning event venue. Rooms in Il Borgo embrace a soft color palette of natural tones, all pointing to the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty’s architectural contributions to Florence. Il Borgo features a frescoed chapel, winter garden, pool house with a heated pool, 12 suites and more. The space is available on a private-hire basis with a minimum two-night hire.
Across the estate, visitors will also find a collection of updated Tuscan farmhouses, offering everything from private pools to unparalleled views of the region. Available on a self-catering basis, each farmhouse is unique in layout and features indoor and outdoor spaces encouraging guests to enjoy the views. Choose from the nine-bedroom Il Casolese, complete with an infinity pool overlooking olive groves; L’Orto, a space for up to 18 guests on the banks of the Greve River; or Il Prato, a series of three farmhouses tucked between oka forests and vineyards for up to 22 guests.

Vignamaggio’s guest house, La Pensione, underwent refurbishment, as well, to include two new suites, opening just in time for the summer season. Each of the 19 guestrooms incorporates elements from one of the love stories of Renaissance writer and poet Bocaccio. La Pensione also features welcoming lounges, a small library and a lavender-fringed pool.
Vignamaggio expects even more additions in the coming months, as well. This December, the Vignamaggio team launches La Fattoria, a 120-seat, vineyard -iew restaurant celebrating the best of the estate’s produce. In addition to an on-site farm shop and deli stocked with the estate’s own wines, guests can also watch artisans at work curing meats and creating Italian cheeses.

And, slated for summer 2024, Vignamaggio plans to open Renaissance Villa Vignamaggio as a 19-suite hotel.

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
